Even though they have baseball’s best record, the Detroit Tigers must add to their roster before the MLB trade deadline. Detroit has a fantastic lineup, but the third base position remains uncertain after Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox during the winter.
While the Tigers should look for great players to improve their offensive output, there are more concerns about their bullpen. However, might Detroit still pursue a Gold Glove-winning third baseman?
Detroit Tigers could look into Baltimore third baseman Ramon Urias
Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold suggested an idea on his podcast, Days of Roar, on what the team could do with third base this summer. It may not be an attractive option that elevates the Tigers to a new level, but it provides depth and insurance for their infield defense.
“I think you put all the chips in,” Petzold said about the Tigers’ trade deadline. “But do the Tigers go a different route? Maybe they go the Ramon Urias route, where you get a right-handed hitting infielder. He hits against left-handed pitchers. He’s an offensive upgrade from a guy like Andy Ibanez. Those are some not-so-big-boy names that maybe protect that long-term sustainability, but maybe you don’t offer you the best chance to win the World Series in 2025.”
Urias, 31, won a Gold Glove as a third baseman three years ago and currently has a .725 OPS against left-handed pitching in 2025. The Orioles’ third baseman had a hot start to the season with a .938 OPS but has been inconsistent lately. Urias had a tough May and start of July while hitting well in April and June.
The hope is that Detroit can acquire an elite third baseman, but there aren’t many options ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Urias would represent a low-cost option that provides solid splits against left-handed pitching and the elite defense that Detroit’s infield needs moving forward.
