The search and rescue attempts were delayed due to the harsh weather, although the two guys had been missing since Thursday. That night, they probably died. The search team discovered them at Pic Tyndall, on the southwest shoulder of the mountain with a view of Italy, at an elevation of around 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level. Only light clothing was on one of the men. They were discovered beneath half a meter of snow in a valley. The 4,478-meter peak is located on the Italian-Swiss border. Since its initial ascent in 1865, over 500 people have lost their lives while attempting to ascend it.
