Lakers star Luka Dončić Big response to injury…
On August 19, Luka Dončić led Slovenia to a 93-81 victory over Great Britain in their first warmup game for the 2024 EuroBasket, putting an end to doubts regarding his recent knee injury. The Los Angeles Lakers star scored 28 points in 28 minutes, with 10 assists and eight rebounds, demonstrating that he was fully recovered from a knee contusion sustained in Slovenia’s loss to Latvia over the weekend. On Saturday, Dončić limped off the floor after accidentally landed on his right knee. He seized the joint, motioned to be substituted, and headed to the locker room with a trainer.
Dončić returned to the bench and practiced with Slovenia on Monday, exhibiting resilience and drive. Tuesday’s performance against Britain left little doubt about his health.
Dončić scored 21 points in the first 11 minutes, giving Slovenia an early double-digit lead that increased to 20 points in the second half.
With his conditioning intact, the Lakers great will now face his friend and fellow NBA standout Nikola Jokić when Slovenia and Serbia play their final EuroBasket tune-up on Thursday. Slovenia begins its EuroBasket campaign against Poland on August 28. Luka’s First Lakers Training Camp Greg St. Jean, the Lakers’ assistant who also serves on Slovenia’s coaching staff, is optimistic about Doncic’s conditioning and what it means for the Lakers next season. “The idea of Luka having an opportunity to play in training camp with us is going to be critical, and getting this team to build their chemistry and work together,” St. Jean replied to BasketNews. “This season, we are ready and enthusiastic to hold a training camp together. We believe that LeBron [James] and Luka will benefit greatly from being able to spend more time together, as will our squad.
Beyond Luka-LeBron chemistry, St. Jean is keen to incorporate the Lakers’ new players. “We’re excited about all of our new additions,” he told me. “Our team continues to improve. The goal for us is obvious: to have great depth and versatility.”
Dončić response to injury…
Great depth and versatility. The Lakers improved their roster by acquiring former No. 1 selection Deandre Ayton, 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, and 23-year-old wing Jake LaRavia. Ayton solves the team’s most obvious deficiency at centre, while Smart and LaRavia offer perimeter defence, senior leadership, and youthful enthusiasm. “I think we’ve done that,” St. Jean said of the Lakers’ increased depth and adaptability. “We’ve had a number of diverse players who have participated in important playoff games. Then we added some young players that are hungry and enthusiastic. It is more about a group of players than a single addition. But we’ve done an excellent job, and we’re enthusiastic about our new teammates.”
With Dončić completely recovered and ready to take the floor, the Lakers are primed to combine superstar potential with depth, experience, and versatility—setting the stage for a redemption season following their first-round flameout last season.
