Big change at BVB

Große Veränderungen in BVBBorussia Dortmunds Führungskrise wurden friedlich geregelt, wie Präsident Reinhold Lunow zurücktritt und den Weg für CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke ebnet.

What happened? Dortmund’s current president, Lunow, stated that he will not seek re-election, essentially ending the power struggle at the club’s top level. This decision, revealed in a club statement, clears the door for a peaceful shift of power to long-time CEO Watzke. This development puts an end to a conflict that had been festering for weeks, with Lunow originally intending to run against Watzke.

THE BIGGER PICTURE Lunow’s departure concludes a difficult period of internal strife at the German club. This presidential quarrel comes after a separate power struggle erupted in the club’s sports department earlier this year. The initial conflict resulted in a big rift between then-sporting director Sebastian Kehl and squad planner Sven Mislintat over transfer control.  The calm ending of the presidential race between Lunow and Watzke now enables Dortmund to move forward with a united leadership and a clear focus on the club’s future.

WHAT LUNOW SAID: In a formal statement to the club media, Lunow stated: “In recent weeks, my team and I have been working hard to guarantee that BVB continues to develop in the best interests of its members. The active participation of members, consideration of fan interests, and strict adherence to the BVB code of values were all crucial to me. Borussia Dortmund must maintain its identity in times of change.
