Fans of the Los Angeles Lakers and Team Slovenia were waiting impatiently for the start of EuroBasket on Saturday after five-time All-NBA L.A. superstar guard Luka Doncic sustained a right knee contusion while warming up for his home country of Slovenia against his former Dallas Mavericks teammate Kristaps Porzingis and Porzingis’ Latvian squad. Slovenia ultimately lost against Latvia by double digits, 100-88, with Doncic unable to play.
An update regarding the 6-foot-6 pro’s future availability has now been made public via the official X account of the Slovenian basketball federation.
“After the match [against Latvia] in Riga, the team will continue preparations for EuroBasket on Monday – already on Tuesday, a clash with Great Britain awaits us at Arena Stozice,” states Slovenia. “The team will also be joined in training by captain Luka Doncic, who fortunately finished the game against Latvia without injury,” states Slovenia. That implies that Doncic will be attending the team’s Monday practice with his teammates, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Doncic’s next scheduled match would be against Great Britain on Tuesday, as Stein and the Slovenian federation point out. In what will eventually be a friendly match, Stein warns that the squad does not know if Doncic will be available. On Thursday, Slovenia will play their final friendly matchup against Team Serbia, led by three-time MVP Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. A week after the Serbia encounter, on August 28, Slovenia will meet Team Poland in its first EuroBasket competition matchup.
