The Greatest Places to Begin the English Camino

A lesser-known but incredibly fulfilling path of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is the Camino Inglés, or “English Way.” With two traditional starting places in North-Western Spain the port cities of Ferrol or A Coruña the Camino Ingles provides a streamlined Camino experience that is rich in culture and history. Historically, pilgrims from Northern Europe especially England and Ireland have traveled this path. Only the trip from Ferrol is eligible for the Compostela certificate, covering roughly 119 km (74 miles) from Ferrol and 75 km (47 miles) from A Coruña.

Even though the Camino Inglés is shorter, it nevertheless offers all of the classic Camino experiences. It leads to Santiago de Compostela, the spiritual center of the world, via charming villages, serene woodlands, and stunning rural vistas. Because it is less crowded, it offers a more private, solitary experience. Local food is a great element of the trip, and you’ll experience truly warm Galician hospitality. For individuals with little time but a strong desire to experience the spiritual and cultural depth of the Camino de Santiago, the Camino Inglés is an excellent choice.

The Road Less Traveled: A Coruña

One of the starting sites for the Camino Inglés is A Coruña, a city renowned for its beauty and rich cultural legacy. The final 75 kilometers of the Camino from A Coruña combine historical intrigue with stunning seaside scenery. Despite being shorter, this route delivers a rich experience, taking travelers past historical sites and through beautiful scenery, offering a deep spiritual trip.

Few pilgrims begin their Camino journey from A Coruña, despite it being the larger and more appealing beginning place, as it is located less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Santiago de Compostela. You must have already finished the Celtic Camino in Ireland in order to be eligible for a Pilgrim Certificate if you begin in A Coruña. Ferrol is hence the more well-liked of the two Camino Ingles starting locations.
