“I’d join anyday”: Beatle George Harrison stated he could play with them forever.

Wounds were still fresh…

The Beatles’ entire journey appears to conclude with a whimper, not an explosion. They were already on their way to creating the most daring music anyone had ever heard, but there were indicators that everyone was drifting in different directions by the time Allen Klein took over as manager. It was just a matter of time until things began to go wrong, but that didn’t mean George Harrison had to keep grudges against his former bandmates till the end of time.

He understood he had to break out from the Fab Four’s regular quota of two songs per album, but when he eventually became a solo celebrity, he wasn’t exactly eager to be the knockout frontman that everyone expected him to be.

Wounds were still fresh…

He was always more comfortable working as part of a team, which explains why he had so many collaborators. Derek and the Dominoes served as his backing band for many of the songs on his double album experience, and in the Travelling Wilburys, Harrison finally looked comfortable to be in the spotlight for so long that he was joined by fellow legends such as Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison.

However, there was always the issue of whether the band would reunite.

. Starr may have been a pleasant way for Harrison to have fun, but he always considered John Lennon to be the group’s older brother, often accompanying him on songs like ‘How Do You Sleep’.

The wounds were still too fresh for Harrison to accept any of his Beatles history, but he was always willing to give Lennon’s material a chance, saying, “John has gone through his phase, but it feels to me like he’s come around, and we’re all at the point. To be honest, I’d rather be in a band with John Lennon than one with Paul McCartney, but that’s nothing personal. It’s just from a musical perspective.”

Although Harrison has never sought to be malevolent towards McCartney, that type of hatred did surface briefly while working on the Anthology project. Harrison only consented to join knowing that Jeff Lynne was producing, and given Macca’s meticulous tendencies, criticising Harrison’s actions in the studio would always be tricky.

And, given that Harrison believed Lennon could have been a member of the Wilburys, that love never faded. Lennon may not have considered himself a great guitarist, but there’s no denying the natural connection that can develop between people who’ve been playing together since they were children.
