According to the report’s statistics from INRIX, a global transportation analytics business, drivers in London lost 101 hours in 2024 while stuck in traffic, representing a 2% increase in delays over the previous 12 months, according to its 2024 Global Traffic Scorecard. Additionally, about half of all traffic delays in the UK occur in the capital.

INRIX stated that the delays cost to London was £3.85 billion, averaging £942 per driver*.
Looking at the wider analysis for the UK, the country lost £7.7 billion, £200 million more than in 2023.
The average UK driver lost 62 hours due to traffic congestion last year, up only one hour from the previous 12-month period. This works out to £581 per driver per year.

Bob Pishue, transportation analyst and author of the report: “While the UK did see a slight increase in congestion again this year, overall congestion has remained steady.
It’s interesting to note that places outside of the capital experienced the biggest increases in traffic, with Manchester witnessing a significant 13% spike. Even while the amount of time lost in London increased just little, it still accounted for half of the delay nationwide. Birmingham and Wigan dropped a spot, but Leeds and Bristol both rose. Due to delays that increased to 53 hours wasted per motorist in Sheffield and Edinburgh, these cities were added to the top 10 list this year.

During the 5:00 PM peak, drivers have an extra 17-minute delay on the westbound A40 between the North Circular and the A406, which is the city’s most clogged road. Over the course of a year, this adds up to 68 hours spent stuck in traffic.

The eastbound A420, which runs from the Lawrence Hill Roundabout to Hollow Road, is the busiest route in Bristol, the second-most congested city in the UK. On weekdays, drivers lose roughly five minutes per day at 4:00 PM, for a total of 21 hours lost annually. The A65/New Road southbound, the A657/Leeds Road westbound, and the A650 southbound were the busiest roads in Leeds.
